In 2018 the cantilever parasol really took off (not literally), therefore, there’s a good chance that they’ll be all the rage during the spring to summer months of 2019 too.

However, to ensure you buy the best cantilever parasol for your money or one that won’t let you down, then you’ll need to know what makes a decent one.

Firstly, you must ensure that you have a solid base in which the parasol will stand to ensure stability and sturdiness.

Secondly, although this product will generally be used in pleasant weather conditions you will still need it to be at least water resistant or even fully waterproof, as well as providing a level of UV protection.

Finally, the frame must be powder coated to provide rust resistance and increase durability, which will also increase the lifespan of the use of the parasol.  Here are our top choices below with reviews.

It offers 360 degree rotating base with 3 different tilt positions, giving you the ultimate control and providing the right cover for your needs.

The frames aluminium so it’s lightweight yet durable, meaning you can easily move it around your garden.

8 aluminium spokes hold the canopy in place, providing the support you need when there’s a breeze in the air, keeping you protected. Assisting with the stability is a dual layer canopy.

Having dual layers like this allows the wind to blow straight through and will meet little resistance, stopping the parasol from tipping over. It’s great for the UK as we all know the weather can change in a moment.

A nice weighty canopy, 240g/m², giving you fantastic protection from UV rays and rainfall. It makes a really relaxing sound when the rain lands on it. Another bonus about the canopy is that it’s made from polyester that has been treated to repel water.

The only flaw with this product is that you’ll have to buy the base separately, click here to check the price.

It has 8 steel ribs that are fixed into the canopy section and during breezier offer a very good level of protection and ensure that the integrity of the umbrella is kept intact.

These 8 rods that offer extra strength in the canopy section also help to maintain the shape of the umbrella section and should it begin to rain the water will just run off.

If you’re after something to cover your BBQ then this is the perfect one. It features a huge 3m canopy that will easily give the protection the chef will need whilst cooking.

It’s very easy to open and close as you simply just rotate the crank, this will move the ropes that are situated inside the actual pole itself.

There’s no need to worry about not liking the colour as you’re spoilt for choice with this product, it’s got 7 colours to choose from.

It features 6 support ribs on the underside of the canopy, allowing it to retain its shape for years to come and to also help prevent it being damaged by strong winds.

Another great benefit when there’s support ribs on the underside is the flex they allow. Should any objects land on top of the canopy, for example if you have children throwing balls around nearby, then you’ll be glad to hear that it will retain its shape and the ball will simply bounce off.

Setting it up is easy, it weighs just 12kg which is quite light. On the flip side though, the lightweight means you’ll probably need to invest in some extra weights to keep it in place if you know strong winds are expected.

When I was visiting my local hardware store, B&Q, I found they also stocked this cantilever parasol but it was much more expensive than on amazon and I’m glad I found it online beforehand.

There’s so many uses you can get out of this, it really is ideal for any type of event. You can use it to cover things such as: hot tubs, balconies, BBQ’s, patios or you could even use it outside your business.

Steel ribs support the canopy, there’s 8 in total, they are sturdy and provide a strong structure for it. You’ll feel comfortable being sat under it with this in mind.

It creates a really magical atmosphere when the lights are on in the night.

Best of all, they are solar powered so you’ll be happy knowing that there’s no environmental impact of having these running. Also allowing you to not worry about having to replace the batteries.

It’s available in 4 different colours but my personal favourite is the burgundy as it looks really elegant in any garden, especially once the lights get going.

A simple design, you will have no issues opening and closing the parasol as its a handle crank.

Setting it up is also a breeze, there’s clear assembly instructions inside the box and take you through the process step by step (you could probably figure it out anyway as it’s that simple).

Cantilever Parasols – Buyer’s Guide

To make sure you get the best cantilever parasol, we’ve written up a buying guide to help you ensure you make the right choice.

There’s quite a few factors that come into play when trying to find the right one.

Parasol functions

This is something that I’d consider of high importance, functionality.

First of all, basic functionality means that it should be able to do the intended job – provide a place of shade.

If it fails to do this then there’s no point buying it!

Here you need to be checking that the canopy is large enough to cover the target area, this could be a small section of your patio, garden or perhaps you want it angled over a swimming pool / hot tub?

Next up, in regards to functionality, is how the canopy is opened.

Most tend to be cranks now, this seems to be the easiest mechanism available.

A crank is simply a gear that needs to be rotated and this will then allow you to lock the parasol in whatever position you intend.

There are two other primary mechanisms available on the market currently, a pulley system and the traditional umbrella pull-up.

The pulley system works by having a rope that you “pull on the pulley”, this works the same way a traditional flag pole does. It will raise or lower the canopy with ease but the ropes tend to begin to fray and personally, I think the rope ruins the aesthetic appeal.

So the final mechanism for the canopy is the traditional umbrella system. It works exactly as umbrellas do, I’m not a huge fan of this as cantilever’s tend to be pretty big so you may experience difficulties in getting it fully open.

I’d avoid this particular mechanism if you have any type of back problem or are pregnant.

Manoeuvrability

When you’re investing in a piece of kit like this, you must remember that the sun always moves.

Thus, the shade that your cantilever will cast, will move!

You want to be looking at the frame/arms/joints, I’ve been unfortunate enough to find that after leaving it outside all winter the joints had become rusted and it was a bit of a nightmare sorting that out.

If you loosen the joints yourself (with wd40 or unscrewing bolts) you MUST ensure you don’t over do it – it could end up crashing down.

Anyway, you want to be checking that it has a few sections that can be easily moved.

This will give you the flexibility to re-position it with ease and keep the shade on your guests all afternoon.

Sometimes the joint at the top of the canopy will give it a bit of flex in the wind, this is a positive thing as it will help reduce the chance of it being blown over.

Safety

Poor designs lead to a poor base, it’s something you definitely want to avoid if you have youngsters running around.

Tipping over is a prominent problem because of this, it’s actually quite dangerous, so you need to try and avoid low quality models (our expert reviews have ensured this problem has been curtailed – we care about your safety!).

Without a sufficient weight at the bottom, it will be prone to tipping – however, you can purchase additional weights just for the added peace of mind.

So, what do you need to look for?

Our primary check is the base weight and the area it covers. The wider the base, the sturdier it will be.

The second thing we check for is the canopy itself, some feature vents that help reduce the impact the wind will have on the stability of the product.

Finally, but this has nothing to do with the product itself, the location that you intend on placing it.

I’d always recommend you try and avoid an area that will be susceptible to frequent, strong winds.

Build Quality

The first thing I’ll always be checking for is the frame and base. You’ll find that the majority of bases will be made from a thick, dense plastic that should be able to support it comfortably even in slight winds.

The frame itself will usually be made from either steel, aluminium, wood or plastic.

If you’re after a high quality product then you’ll definitely want to be aiming to get a steel frame, preferably powder coated as this should provide a smooth finish which will improve its manoeuvrability, as I mentioned earlier.

Powder coating also make it longer lasting due to the various benefits it provides over the standard liquid paint:

PROS:
  • Durable
  • Chip resistant
  • Weatherproof
  • Huge colour selection
  • Long Lasting

CONS:
  • Difficult to touch up
  • More expensive than liquid paint

Canopy material

The cover is the part that will give you the protection from the sun and its UV rays, there’s a few different materials that you can usually choose from.

  • Canvas – A very popular choice as it’s made from natural materials and eco friendly. It’s also very durable and quite a cheap option. However, it does have drawbacks, if you’re in a pretty wet place (like most of the UK…) then without proper care you may find mould will start to grow on your canopy.
  • Olefin – Highly waterproof, it’s perfect if you’re going to have your canopy outside in heavy rain. Due to it being water resistant, that also gives it resistance to mildew and protection from colour fading.
  • Polyester – The budget choice, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad material. It’s very strong and comes in varying thicknesses depending on how much you wish to spend, it’s also available in a wide variety of colours. Low maintenance is a bonus to having this material for your canopy as it’s easy to wipe down. A major flaw in it though, is that you can expect it to disintegrate over a short period of time if it’s exposed to a high amount of UV rays. On the upside though, it’s easy to get it treated so that it’s protected from UV radiation.

Maintenance

Maintaining your cantilever can feel like a chore but if you invest in a higher end model then you will not need to spend much time ensuring it’s maintained.

The best way to keep it in the best shape is by regularly wiping down the canopy, I’d recommend that you always do it following a BBQ as the smoke can begin to stain – or if you have smoking guests over.

Simply wipe down the canopy with warm soapy water and leave it to dry naturally with the air outside, this will help the canopy retain it’s colour and shape.

Losing its colour will also happen naturally over long periods of time, to extend the lifespan, keep it retracted when it’s not in use and also ensure you pack it away during the winter or if you know it will not be used for a long period of time.

Finally, keeping the joints and shafts clean will ensure smooth operation in future use.

If you end up leaving it out over winter, you can expect the joints to rust over and make it pretty much unusable.

You can repair this, but it will be quite a lot of work for you and will involve extensive amounts of WD40.

Opting for a model with a smooth finish will help keep the joints and mechanisms moving smoothly as there’s less friction between the parts.

Conclusion

By now you should be an expert on cantilevers…

Maybe not, but at least you know have the knowledge to hopefully make the right purchase for you.

I appreciate you taking the time out to read my buying guide and hope it works out well for you, I’m sure you’ll have the best summer relaxing under your new parasol.
